A Boy Nation
by Robert McColl

Look at them
The Boy Nation
They jump the walls
No work today

 The ale stands proudly
Boys become men
Smug in the Pub
A Boy Nation

Hard hands, soft souls
They glisten with sweat
They make me smile
And want to chant

Something touched me deep inside
Sounds of hammer beating steel
The heat of the forge
The cackle of the welder

Time and motion
Clock in and out
Be good, boys
Don’t let me down

Make the most of freedom
The walls won’t fall down
We take the best of you
In here you’ll surely drown

These boys have sweethearts
But not on this shift
Not in this town
Where thoughts soon drift

Don’t you know son?
This is for life
Ask your father
He knows the truth
